The colonial past is deeply intertwined with the history of the Netherlands. This legacy also shaped the development of science and medicine. In the audiotour In a different light, we invite you to look at familiar objects with a new perspective. Behind objects such as medical instruments or anatomical books lie stories that have long remained untold.

The tour explores how colonialism and slavery contributed to knowledge and prosperity — but at a great human cost. You'll hear how plants from Suriname became part of scientific collections, how people were categorised by skin colour, and how the rise of science was connected to systems of oppression. The tour reveals that history is complex, but there are many perspectives that should no longer remain untold.
